It's a big week for fans of the Star Wars saga as May the Fourth is looming in the not-too-distant future. It also seems like the San Diego Padres are embracing a quote from one of the Star Wars films as their mantra moving into a new month.
San Diego Padres finally "fully operational" and embracing Star Wars quote
The quote, "Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station," was uttered by Emperor Palpatine to Luke Skywalker in 1983's "Return of the Jedi." The phrase has even gathered attention in our everyday conversations as a way to tell someone he or she should be ready to, according to Urban Dictionary, "get destroyed physically, mentally, and spiritually."
So maybe we'll tone that down just a bit, but it's clear the Padres have rediscovered their swagger since heading to Mexico City and receiving luchadore masks from WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio. In their last three games, including the two at high altitude south of the border, the Padres have averaged 10 runs per game and earned a victory in all three contests.
Part of that swagger is Fernando Tatis Jr. settling into his role at the top of the lineup and the effect it has on the rest of the Padres lineup. Monday's home victory over the Reds was the first time Tatis had played in front of the home crowd at Petco Park and his return was not only welcomed with loud cheers, but also solid play in the field and at the plate.
Of course, not everything is going to be perfect for the Padres moving forward (we do know what happened to that battle station at the end of "Return of the Jedi"), but, with the San Diego lineup fully armed and operational, the struggles the team saw in April are hopefully a galaxy far, far away.
