Get excited, Pads fans! The Friars are playing baseball today. Well, sort of. While the regular season hasn't started quite yet, the Cactus League begins today as the San Diego Padres take the field against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This will be the first time the Friar faithful will get an up-close look at life without Juan Soto. The Padres traded their All-Star outfielder over the winter, but in doing so were able to bolster their starting rotation.

How will Xander Bogaerts adjust to his new position? Who will be new manager Mike Shildt's leadoff hitter? Will Padres fans get to see top infield prospect, Jackson Merrill, in the outfield? Padres vs Dodgers: Probable starters for 2024 Cactus League opener

Java Joe will toe the rubber for the Padres this afternoon when San Diego steps onto the field for the first time this spring. After making just 17 starts last season, Joe Musgrove is healthy and will be on the bump for the Friars against their division rival.

Opposing the Padres will be Los Angeles starter Gavin Stone. The rookie got his feet wet in 2023, and will looking to secure a spot in the Dodgers rotation during the upcoming season. At this stage of the spring, it's very likely that both Musgrove and Stone are removed from the game after one inning, two tops.

While the starting lineup for these two teams during the Seoul Series next month will surely be a little different, there will certainly be some of the same names on Mike Shildt's lineup card when the Padres open the regular season in Korea on March 20th. But who's Shildt sending onto the field for today's Cactus League opener?

Fernando Tatis Jr. will lead things off, while Xander Bogaerts gets comfortable at the keystone. Jake Cronenoworth is at first base, with Luis Campusano hanging the signs. Ha-Seong Kim will occupy shortstop ad bat fifth, with top infield prospect Jackson Merrill logging some innings in left field. Eugy Rosario, Cal Mitchell, and Jose Azocar round out Shildt's lineup for the Padres Cactus League opener.
