As much as the San Diego Padres have been trying to sell Xander Bogaerts' injury as not that serious, that has been tough to believe. Bogaerts obviously hurt his shoulder on a play against the Atlanta Braves earlier this week and his reaction was not one that a player makes when he is only going to miss a game or two.

However, the exact nature of the injury had been a mystery to pretty much everyone since it occurred. Padres manager Mike Shildt said that his initial scans went well, but that Bogaerts needed more testing to determine the exact nature of his injury and if he would need to make a trip to the injured list.

Any optimism that the Padres could see Bogaerts back in the lineup quickly were dashed with the news on Wednesday that Bogaerts was indeed headed to the injured list. While there hasn't been an official roster move yet, the recently signed David Peralta appears to have a locker waiting for him in Cincinnati.

Padres News: Xander Bogaerts injury revealed to be fractured shoulder

Luckily, the break doesn't seem too bad and assuming there is nothing else going on with his shoulder, it sounds like he should be able to recover just fine. The exact severity of Bogaerts' shoulder injury isn't yet known, through clearly the second round of scans found a fracture the initial scans didn't catch — which isn't that uncommon especially when there is a lot of inflammation.

As for Peralta, he doesn't help the Padres in the infield although San Diego doesn't have a shortage of infielders whatsoever. What Peralta does give the Padres is another bat as an option off the bench. Peralta is a shadow of the guy who won a Silver Slugger with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018, but he can still hit a bit (although his minor league numbers in 2024 have been rough) and was acquired by the Padres for just this sort of "break in case of emergency" situation.

I started my career writing about baseball covering the Atlanta Braves for SB Nation's Talking Chop back in 2015 which has since been renamed Battery Power. After years of writing for those fine folks, I made the decision to take over as Site Expert at House That Hank Built before becoming a full-time MLB Staff Writer for FanSided in 2023. Along the way, I have been a guest on multiple ESPN radio affiliates as well as 680 The Fan and 92.9 The Game to discuss Braves baseball and especially Braves prospects and was a long-time host on the Battery Power podcast. These days, I continue to write about the Braves as well as covering the Astros, Padres, and Angels with particular expertise with minor league coverage, the MLB Draft, and bashing Anthony Rendon when possible. When I am not writing about or talking about baseball (which is seldom), I am an avid baseball card collector (Maddux and Soroka being my primary personal collections) and I also collect shark teeth. All other sports are mostly dead to me as my Bills have broken my heart too many times.
