Padres News: Yu Darvish's personal matter, Xander Bogaerts rehab, All-Star selections
Yu Darvish will be away from the team for awhile.
The San Diego Padres started their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks off on the right foot with a 10-8 win on Friday night courtesy of a Manny Machado walk-off, but the D-backs got the last laugh and took the final two games of the series.
San Diego's pitching staff gave up a total of 24 runs to Arizona's lineup over the weekend, making the need for trade deadline additions even more obvious. But the Padres' starting staff got another bit of bad news after one of their pitchers landed on the restricted list.
Padres News: Yu Darvish placed on restricted list
The Padres have been without Yu Darvish since the end of May as San Diego's starter has been battling both groin and elbow injuries. But the right-hander will be missing an increased amount of time after the Padres placed Darvish on the restricted list.
According to Padres manager Mike Shildt, Darvish is dealing with a personal matter and the veteran is be away from the team for an indefinite amount of time. The restricted list is slightly different than the injured list, but works in a similar fashion. The Padres still maintain contractual rights to Darvish, but he does not count toward the active roster, but there isn't a firm timetable for how long he has to be out.
Padres News: Xander Bogaerts plays the field in rehab assignment
The Padres have been without Xander Bogaerts since the end of May when the superstar infielder injured his shoulder while attempting to make a diving play on defense. Bogaerts was placed on the IL with a broken shoulder.
But the Friars got a bit of good news as Bogaerts is was back on the field and playing second base during a rehab outing with Triple-A El Paso late last week. There's a chance that Bogaerts could be activated before the All-Star break, but it seems more likely that the Padres' second baseman will return to the active roster later next week.
Padres News: Jackson Merrill & Luis Arràez among 5 San Diego players on All-Star roster
The Padres will be well represented during the All-Star Game next Tuesday. Jackson Merrill, Jurickson Profar, Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arráez, and Robert Suarez will all be headed to Arlington, Texas next week for the Midsummer Classic.
Both Profar and Tatis were named All-Star starters last week, and with Merrill's inclusion, San Diego's entire outfield will be part of the National League roster. Arráez's spot on the roster comes as no surprise, and Suarez is more than deserving of the All-Star nod. Congrats to all five Padres who'll be representing the city of San Diego next Tuesday night at Globe Life Field.
