Padres News: Manny Machado HR record, Luis Arráez maintains streak, Jurickson Profar
The San Diego Padres got back to their winning ways on Tuesday night in Seattle. The Friars had dropped two straight heading into their series opener against the Mariners, and with the surging New York Mets closing the gap in the NL Wild Card race, San Diego needed a spark.
Yu Darvish did his part on the mound. The veteran got his fifth win of the season and, while he allowed two home runs, both were solo shots and the right-hander also struck out five batters. Tanner Scott experienced a hiccup in the seventh inning, but Jason Adam and Robert Suarez closed the door. The night, however, belonged to Manny Machado.
Manny Machado breaks Padres' franchise home run record
Machado was been on pace to break the Padres' all-time home run record this season, and the third baseman did just that on Tuesday night. While it would have been special to break the record in front of the hometown fans at Petco Park, Machado's 429-foot blast off George Kirby increased the Friars lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning.
Machado's 164th round-tripper as a member of the Padres surpassed the previous record held by former San Diego slugger Nate Colbert. Machado has 339 total homers during his big league career, and with a contract that extends through 2033, there's plenty of time for the six-time All-Star to build upon his all-time home run mark.
Luis Arráez maintains strikeout-less streak for Padres
The streak is still alive: Luis Arráez has gone 120 straight plate appearances without striking out.
The Padres' infielder hasn't struck out in over a month and went 3-for-5 on Tuesday in Seattle. Believe it or not, Tony Gwynn's team record of 170 plate appearances without striking out may well be in jeopardy. Arráez still has 50 to go, but at this rate, it's doubtful that anyone will get the Padres' star to swing and miss.
Jurickson Profar returning to form after brief slump with Padres
Jurickson Profar had been stuck in a rut at the tail end of August. One of the brightest stars for the Padres this season, Profar had just one hit in his previous 40 plate appearances heading into the series finale against the Detroit Tigers last week.
But since Sept. 5, Profar has regained the stroke that earned him an All-Star nod in 2024. After posting a .373 OPS from Aug. 26 through Sept. 4, Profar is hitting .300/.364/.500 in his last five games. The Friars need that version of Profar to stick around if they hope to advance in the postseason.
