Josh Hader next team odds: Don’t expect Padres to move star closer at deadline
Will the Padres move Josh Hader at the deadline?
By Peter Dewey

San Diego Padres closer Josh Hader could end up on the trade block at the deadline – if the team decides to sell.
Hader has been great in the 2023 season, but he’s in the final season of his contract, making him a trade candidate if the Padres don’t plan on re-signing him this coming offseason.
The All-Star closer would likely have a robust market if he is moved, but which team is favored to land him?
Here are the latest odds for Hader’s next team:

The Padres are the clear favorite to keep Hader, but the rest of the teams in the mix appear to be contenders.
The Field (+900) is also an interesting choice if a dark horse team ends up making a move for the Padres closer. But he will need to become available first…
Leading contenders to trade for Josh Hader (based on odds)
- Tampa Bay Rays: +750
- Texas Rangers: +800
- The Field: +900
- Houston Astros: +1100
- Cincinnati Reds: +1300
- Los Angeles Dodgers: +1500
The leading candidate to trade for Hader is Tampa Bay, and that implied odds are at just 11.76 percent for that to happen.
The Padres are four games below .500 on the season, but they’ve spent the last few offseason – and trade deadlines – going all in to build a championship contender.
I can’t see the team moving on from Hader considering the season he’s had. He has a 0.95 ERA and 24 saves in 28 opportunities in 2023.
While there are plenty of teams that would trade for a player of Hader’s caliber, I’d prefer betting on him to remain with the Padres at -150 odds. The only way it makes sense for San Diego to sell is if it sells multiple pieces, otherwise the team will be caught in limbo of contention and rebuilding.
