A disappointing regular season will bring change to the makeup of a baseball team. Changes have already begun for the Padres as their manager has been allowed to fly the coop without much of a fight from team management.
The next step is reducing the Friars’ payroll ($256 million), which was the third-highest in the majors last season. If the rumors are true, the most logical choice to leave is Soto, who is eligible to receive an estimated $30 million in 2024 salary arbitration.
The three-time All-Star was the Padres' most productive player at the plate. Soto batted .275 with 35 homers and 109 RBI. He single-handedly tried to keep the Friars in postseason contention with little help offensively. His second-half at-bats re-defined him as being one of the best players in the majors today.
