The next step is reducing the Friars’ payroll ($256 million), which was the third-highest in the majors last season. If the rumors are true, the most logical choice to leave is Soto, who is eligible to receive an estimated $30 million in 2024 salary arbitration.

The three-time All-Star was the Padres' most productive player at the plate. Soto batted .275 with 35 homers and 109 RBI.
