Padres manager Mike Shildt is not worried about the disaster that was the Friars' bullpen on Tuesday night. On the road in the Bronx, the Padres handed the Yankees a gift in the form of a 10-run seventh inning, which fatefully ended San Diego's six-game winning streak with a 12-3 loss.

The Padres have one of the best bullpens in baseball. Shildt knows it. Fans know it. But in facing his former team, where he was beloved, Padres reliever Wandy Peralta had as bad of an outing as he's ever seen in the big leagues. Still, Shildt is not fretting.

“One of those games. One of those innings. I will be more than happy to run them both out there tomorrow," Shildt told MLB.com.

Replacing Adrian Morejon in the seventh inning with the bases loaded, Peralta came in to face former Padre Trent Grisham... and that's where the trouble began. Right out of the gate, Peralta walked Grisham on four pitches to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

Peralta would go on to surrender six runs on four hits and two walks, recording just two outs. In one outing, his season ERA ballooned from 1.35 to 5.14. Unfortunately for relievers, this is how they live and die - one appearance can destroy all of the good work they had initially put in.

Those six runs allowed mark the most he's given up in one appearance across his 10-year MLB career. Before Tuesday night, his career-worst was five runs allowed, doing so twice back in 2018 and 2020.

This series with the Yankees has been a bit chaotic. After coming back from trailing 3-0 on Monday in the rain following the ejections of Mike Shildt and Fernando Tatis Jr., the Yankees responded with a comeback of their own. They will play on Wednesday at 7:05 ET to decide the victor of the series, which could offer a peek into a potential World Series matchup if both teams continue winning at a rapid rate.
