The future of the San Diego Padres' bullpen has bent, but not broke. Just days after hearing news of closer Robert Suarez opting out to test the market, left-hander Wandy Peralta decided to remain with San Diego.
Ahead of the 2024 season, Peralta inked a four-year deal with the Padres with opt-out opportunities following each year. Through two seasons in Southern California, Peralta wants to stay with a team that is hopeful of contending for a World Series in 2026.
Wandy Peralta opts into player option as Padres shore up 2026 bullpen
Is Peralta a high-leverage reliever for the Padres? He isn't, but with Suarez departing, a reliable arm out of the pen is going to be needed more than ever. Peralta is that guy. The 34-year-old produced a 134 ERA+ this past season with an elite ground ball rate. Those metrics will play just fine for the Padres again if he can replicate that.
Peralta appeared in 71 games in 2025, which was the third most on the Padres. Only Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon pitched in more games than Peralta. With those three arms all set to return, plus Mason Miller, this San Diego bullpen is primed for another successful year. This past season, the Friars' pen led Major League Baseball in ERA (3.06) and WHIP (1.15). Knowing that someone like Peralta will come back is a huge bonus. He may not be the best player, but pitchers like him are the ones who complete a strong roster.
Hats off to Peralta for wanting to come back to Petco Park, but also kudos to the organization for making him feel like he is paid well-enough to not have to negotiate for more money. Peralta ended the 2025 regular season with a solid finish. He allowed one run in September across nine innings, which leaves fans with a good impression of him set to return.
