Ever since longtime Padres owner Peter Seidler passed away in 2023, there have been plenty of questions about whether his son, John Seidler, would sell the franchise.
Fast forward to 2025, and those rumors seem to be heading towards reality, as a mix of suitors is beginning to form. As of now, the Padres are valued at $2.31 billion, and it seems the ball is beginning to roll on potential candidates to purchase the NL West team.
Padres sale talk gets real fast as the bidding window quietly cracks open
Current Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob is amongst those involved, as he has expressed interest in owning an MLB team. Lacob attempted to acquire the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Athletics at the time, but failed to.
With the Seidler family looking as if they will sell the franchise, Lacob could be the perfect fit for a team that is trying to win now. Lacob has witnessed four NBA championships with his Warriors, as he witnessed the dynasty transpire in the mid 2010s.
If Lacob were to purchase the Padres, he would step into a core of players that closely resembles the star-driven foundation he had during Golden State’s dynasty run.
Warriors: Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Kevin Durant
Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill
European soccer owners are also chiming in on a potential purchase of the Padres, as Dan Friedkin, the owner of AS Roma, has flirted with the idea of putting a bid down.
No matter who the Seidlers choose to sell to, the team has an incredibly bright future with the young core of players currently under contract. Most of the bidders have a background in sports ownership, which would only benefit the Padres, who look to lift the team off the ground and become perennial contenders every year.
Things are beginning to heat up in the potential sale of the San Diego Padres, and fans should be very excited about what’s to come.
