Padres sacrificed Kash Mayfield for Casey Mize, and A.J. Preller isn't apologizing

If there's one thing that Padres fans can expect from A.J. Preller, it's that he is always going to be on brand. The Friars' President of Baseball Operations always has a trick up his sleeve or a blockbuster move on the brink — and his navigation through the 2026 trade deadline was no different.

Trading for veteran left-hander Robbie Ray and former first-round pick Casey Mize this year, Preller is hoping that San Diego will make a splash in the final two full months of regular season play. And this time around, Preller's acquisition of Mize came at the buzzer, resulting in parting ways with another premier prospect in Kash Mayfield.

But guess what? Preller is not apologizing to anyone for trading one of their best minor leaguers. He wants to win a championship. And he expects for that to happen multiple times.

We can respect Preller's confidence. Every year, he wants to put the Padres in the best possible position to win a World Series. He doesn't ever want to see the team go into a rebuild mode. That part is honorable. He wants San Diego to be relevant every year.

But, that comes up at a lofty price. Annually, Preller gets rid of one or more of the franchise's best prospects. CJ Abrams. James Wood. Leo De Vries. And now Kash Mayfield, who was the team's first-round pick in 2024.

Considering the Padres have not even made the World Series under Preller's reign, it can grow frustrating for fans when they see their best young talent last a couple years in San Diego's farm.

Preller's model sounds good on paper. The MLB roster is always generally strong, but it still hasn't translated into prime results. So it's fair for fans to question Preller's methods, but it's hard to argue against the idea that he isn't trying to put them in a good spot to win. From that, Preller will never be sorry for how he operates.
