Unlike previous offseasons, the San Diego Padres have been weirdly quiet thus far this offseason. This is largely due to the fact they still need to get their payroll under control, but it is pretty wild that AJ Preller hasn't been able to swing a deal of note so far. However. the Padres did get on the board at least a little bit when they signed Mike Brosseau to a minor-league deal.
There is no real point in overselling signing Brosseau. He put together a nice run with the Rays in 2020, but he has been decidedly "meh" ever since and profiles as a bench bat that can fill in at a number of spots in the field in a pinch.
For a playoff contender like the Padres, having a guy like Brosseau who can cover in the event of an injury or just give a guy a day off has real value even if he isn't going to carry the offense in a meaningful manner.
However, the Padres signing Brosseau does mean that Eguy Rosario's future in San Diego just got very, very murky.
Padres signing Mike Brosseau may mean the team is moving on from Eguy Rosario
There was a time when Rosario was thought to be a high-quality role player for the Padres after some strong performances in the minor leagues. However, he has seen time in the big leagues for three straight seasons now with little to show for it, and a broken ankle in 2023 slowed down his ascent to being a regular for the Padres as well.
Just like that, Rosario has gone from a former top-five prospect in San Diego's farm system to a guy who was only being kept around due to his defensive versatility. With a guy like Brosseau in the fold now, one wonders what value Rosario has with the Padres right now.
There is still a chance that the Padres just keep both guys and let the situation take care of itself. San Diego could just end up keeping whichever guy performs better early in 2025. However, don't be surprised if Preller does Preller things and includes Rosario in a trade package to address other roster needs.
