The San Diego Padres always have plenty to be excited about. Whether it's being amidst a battle to sign a superstar, contend in the postseason, or building on an already strong team, San Diego is one the most thriving franchises in the sport today. With this in mind, it's easy to get spoiled, which isn't a bad thing.
But the good news keeps on rolling, and this time, it's coming from the minor leagues. San Diego has some of the top young talent in baseball, and these players are enjoying their success during the colder months of year. Some are even expected to be part the Major League roster, which would be ideal if some big leaguers move on to another team this offseason.
Padres prospect's Winter League outburst offers insurance if Jurickson Profar departs
It seems like All-Star outfielder Jurickson Profar might not be returning to the Padres, which is a bit of a gut-punch to the San Diego fanbase. Profar had his greatest season to date, but he will likely be chasing a hefty payday this winter, and who could blame him? If this happens, that means a spot in the outfield will open up, which could be seamlessly filled by San Diego's No. 17 prospect.
Tirso Ornelas, 24, has been tearing it up in the Mexican Pacific Winter League this season, and it could not have come at a better time. Ornelas' is expected to arrive in The Show sometime next season, so if the Padres bid farewell to Profar, then consider the young outfielder could be the likely replacement.
In 32 games with Charros de Jalisco in Mexico, Ornelas has popped off for five home runs, five doubles, one triple, and 18 walks. His .902 OPS is fourth-best among hitters, too.
Ornelas is carrying his power over from a monumental season with Triple-A El Paso this season. With the Chihuahuas, he boasted 49 extra-base hits in 128 games, batting .297 with 53 walks. Five of his 23 home runs were registered in September, showcasing his muscle as the long season dwindled down.
Ornelas brings a perfect mix of speed and power, something that will fit well with the current Padres roster. With a tremendous set of tools, it seems like left field is his for the taking at Petco Park if Profar departs this season.
