The San Diego Padres' minor league affiliates are finally settled in after a chaotic trade deadline that sent several top prospects away, including Leo De Vries. So many high-end prospects were dealt, leaving the Friars' minor league teams a bit in shambles.
But we are past that now, and this past week was the first with the teams fielding what felt like brand-new rosters. Two pitchers stood out above the rest, and have taken advantage of the new vacancies in the organization's Top 30 ranking.
Miguel Mendez (No. 4) shined in his Double-A debut with the San Antonio Missions, and Garrett Hawkins (No. 19) has kept his scoreless streak alive for another week.
Padres' Miguel Mendez, Garrett Hawkins have been shining stars post-trade deadline
Mendez, 23, was dominant all season with High-A Fort Wayne. Opponents were hitting .180 against him, and he racked up 70 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings. This domination led to him getting promoted to Double-A on August 1. He made his debut on August 7, fanning a career-best 11 batters in six convincing innings with just two unearned runs allowed.
Mendez owns a 10.1 K/9 for his career, and he will definitely be a pitching prospect to keep an eye on these next couple of years.
That is some Double-A debut for Miguel Mendez!

Hawkins, 25, was also promoted from High-A to Double-A on August 1. His season numbers have been off the charts, logging an 8-1 record with 65 strikeouts in 48 innings between Fort Wayne and San Antonio. His ERA sits at 1.43 alongside 10 saves and two holds going into the new week, but that's not his most impressive stat.
In three Double-A outings, he has yet to give up a run, striking out five batters in four innings, and has gone 2-for-2 in save opportunities. Hawkins has not given up a run since April 23, which spans 29 appearances (38 innings) with 51 strikeouts.
