What a week it was for the San Diego Padres on the trade market. After dealing away several top prospects - which called for a re-ranking of the organization - the Friars were still shopping for a minor league catcher.
Past the trade deadline, the Padres made a deal with the Pirates to acquire 27-year-old catcher Eli Wilson. A catcher, Wilson has only played in 11 contests this season with Triple-A Indianapolis. However, he's logged at least one hit in nine of those games, batting .294 with seven RBIs. He's never reached the major leagues, but he may be given his chance if he plays well with Triple-A El Paso, depending on how the catchers play in the majors.
The same thing applies for Luis Campusano, who was hopeful of getting one final chance this year with the Padres. He is on a red-hot streak with El Paso, but he may be a little too late. The Padres traded for Royals' catcher Freddy Fermin, which indirectly feels like a door closed on Campusano suiting up in the big leagues any time soon.
However, Campusano is still applying the pressure and forcing San Diego's front office to consider calling him up. A .305 hitter with a .987 OPS this year in Triple-A, Campusano extended his hitting streak to seven games this past week. Campusano has 10 RBIs and four extra-base hit hits over this span, too.

This tirade would have perfect for him to begin way-ahead of the trade deadline, but now, San Diego has already made the trade for Fermin, who provides elite defensive metrics behind the dish. Campusano may just be cursed by being too good for Minor League Baseball, but not strong enough for MLB. He could be a September call-up, but it's still unclear if he would get significant playing time.
On the pitching end, a pair of MLB arms were optioned to Triple-A this week. Randy Vasquez and Ron Marinaccio were sent down, and neither have appeared in a minor league yet. Vasquez had a 3.93 ERA in 22 starts with San Diego, and Marinaccio had appeared in just 2 1/3 innings, but didn't allow a run at the major league level this season, adding four strikeouts.
