Padres' next move feels clearer than ever after Orioles manager shocker

Albert Pujols becoming the next manager of the San Diego Padres is inching closer to becoming a reality. What was once a faded dream, all signs are now pointing toward the 45-year-old slugger taking over for San Diego. It's just a matter of time, but we'll wait before completely celebrating.

Two of the other organizations seemingly interested in Pujols were the Los Angeles Angels and the Baltimore Orioles. The Halos quickly hired Kurt Suzuki, then last night in a bit of a shocker, the O's announced that they hired Craig Albernaz as their next manager.

Both of those of coaching positions will be centered around helping the team to rebuild, whereas the Padres' gig couldn't be more opposite. The Padres are eager to contend for a World Series in 2026, so who better to lead the ship than a guy who already has great relations with the Friars' star players? It also doesn't hurt that he belted over 700 home runs in his career.

Now, it's not to say that Pujols doesn't have any experience post-playing. He was a special assistant with the Angels, but his overall pedigree should allow him to step in the spotlight a bit more. Several other coaching vacancies are being filled by first-timers in the MLB manager department -- and yet, Pujols still feels like the best candidate.

We can picture it now. Machado and Tatis Jr. are each holding a corner of the World Series trophy. They carry it over to a champagne-soaked Pujols in the clubhouse, who led the Padres to the club's first-ever World Series title. We're salivating simply at the thought of it. But, with other teams interested in Pujols having signed other guys, this fantasy is growing closer and closer to becoming a reality in San Diego. Hopefully AJ Preller and Pujols are on the same page in the interviews and meetings.
