The San Diego Padres close out the week in rollercoaster fashion. In an exciting - and heated - game on Friday night against the Texas Rangers, pitcher Matt Waldron expressed some pain while throwing. Luis Arraez's three-hit game was highlighted by his first spring training home run. The Spring Breakout game also went on last night for San Diego, which saw the Friars prospects fall in a 5-2 effort against the Athletics.

Right-hander Matt Waldron was already on the fence of not earning the fifth spot in the Padres' starting rotation to begin the season, but now, it appears he will be shelved to heal a mild left oblique strain. After warming up in the bullpen on Friday night to come in as a reliever against the Rangers, Waldron felt discomfort, which led to him not pitching in the game. He is slated to miss the start of the regular season now after bolstering an 8.68 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.

In other news from Friday night's contest, which is good this time for Friars fans, is that Luis Arraez clocked three hits, including his first home run of the spring. He took Kumar Rocker deep on a 1-2 offering in the bottom of the second inning. Arraez is now batting .433 this spring, including seven hits in his last three contests.

San Diego had a second game take place on Friday. As part of the Spring Breakout showcase, the Padres' prospects faced the Athletics' prospects. Off the field and in the dugout, one major takeaway was seeing Joe Musgrove mentor some of the younger players. Despite being sidelined this year to recover from Tommy John surgery, the Padres are undoubtedly happy to see Musgrove's investment and care for the future of the team.

Leo De Vries, the Padres' top prospect, led off and played shortstop, batting 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. Ethan Salas, batting fourth and catching, recorded two hits and a run scored, including a double.

Tyler Robertson had the Padres' biggest hit, a line drive single up the middle in the seventh inning to drive in a pair of runs.

Nine total pitchers took the mound for San Diego. Left-hander Boston Bateman was the Padres' highest-rated pitcher to throw on Friday, making his professional debut. In one inning, he allowed two runs on two hits, including a home run, which came against Tommy White. Victor Lizarraga and Bradgley Rodriguez each struck out two batters.
