It's about time.

Ryan Wideman's time to move up has finally arrived. Wideman, 22, more than proved that he was way too good for Single-A ball. In 65 games, he flexed two plus tools by compiling 83 hits and 43 stolen bases. His time with Lake Elsinore — where he dominated since Day 1 — was obviously temporary. Now, it looks like his promotion to High-A Fort Wayne is all but a foregone conclusion.

Reports indicate that Wideman is moving up the ladder and will pack his bags for Indiana. Wideman, rated the seventh-best prospect in the San Diego Padres' organization, is the latest stud outfielder to suit up for Fort Wayne.

With Lake Elsinore, Wideman put together 24 multi-hit games, 12 multi-RBI games, and 11 multi-stolen base efforts. On top of his multi-faceted production, Wideman is averaging less than one strikeout per game, too.

Fort Wayne already has a pair of productive outfielders on the roster. No. 19 Alex McCoy has 34 extra-base hits in 64 games this season. Jake Cunningham has 15 home runs and a .929 OPS through 57 contests. With Wideman joining the team, this should make going to Fort Wayne games even more exciting to look forward to.

This is a well-deserved promotion for Wideman, though it might be coming late. Wideman was batting .324 entering June, but he had only 26 games of pro experience prior to the 2026 season. Perhaps the San Diego organization wanted him to get a longer taste of success before jumping up to the next level.

It's also fair to consider that Cunningham and McCoy's success was keeping Wideman down in Single-A. But, as we have seen, Wideman has forced the Padres to move him up even if the outfield roster is filled in Fort Wayne. It's a good problem for the organization to have. Either way, Wideman earned it — and Padres fans should continue to keep watch on the entire Fort Wayne outfield. Some might join Jackson Merrill at Petco Park in the very near future.
