Padres’ Luis Rengifo signing makes more sense after latest depth piece walks

Nick Solak walking out the door gave San Diego’s quiet Rengifo move some real context.

The Luis Rengifo signing already made sense on the surface. The Padres needed more infield depth, and they've reached the point in the season where every fringe roster move feels like it could eventually play a role.

But now the move looks a little less random now. Nick Solak has elected free agency after being outrighted by the Padres. He was one of the players San Diego had already turned to when the big-league roster needed another piece. Which makes the Rengifo signing read differently.

Padres signing Luis Rengifo looks like a direct response to Nick Solak leaving

Solak’s Padres tenure was brief and kind of forgettable at the major-league level. He didn’t hit enough in his small opportunity. But it’s like there was much we could do with only seven at-bats. Being a depth bat doesn’t usually come with a long runway. So you can’t blame the 31-year old for making the decision to move on.

That left the Padres with the need for bench help. Rengifo was released by the Brewers for a valid reason. He hit just .205 with no home runs in Milwaukee, and that wasn’t going to get the job done.

The Padres probably don’t expect to get the player who hit .300 with 24 stolen bases in 2024. Or the dude who hit 17 home runs in 2022. But they’re also not exactly looking for that. They just need someone usable, who’ll keep the building from burning down.

San Diego’s bench has been a problem for most of the season. Though, lately there’s been an uptick in production, the Padres still haven’t shaken off the early season offensive woes.

Will we see Rengifo in a Padres uniform in 2026? Quite possibly. If it's for added depth from an injury, then it’s almost a certainty. But Jake Cronenworth is also working his way back. They just won four straight. And there’s very much a “if it ain’t broke” vibe happening right now. And at the same time, that doesn’t mean Rengifo isn’t worth the look.

He switch-hits, can play multiple spots, and has enough major-league track record to make this more interesting than the usual Triple-A depth add.
