The San Diego Padres cannot stay from the injury bug. It has been a season of trials and tribulations for the Friars, yet somehow they remain within contention of the postseason.
Jackson Merrill, Michael King, Yu Darvish, Matt Waldron, Joe Musgrove have all seen significant time on the injured list, but Padres manager Mike Shildt has found a way to keep the ship on the right path. But now, things are getting a bit too ridiculous for San Diego, as the injuries are setting fire to a playoff-bound dugout.
In the middle of Xander Bogaerts fracturing his foot and Fernando Tatis Jr. getting scratched from Monday's game at the last second with "lower half tightness" - the Padres were hit with potentially their most devastating injury.
Jason Adam has been diagnosed with a quad tendon rupture, Mike Shildt said.

All-Star reliever Jason Adam was hit with a gruesome quad injury in the middle of Monday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. With one out in the seventh inning amid a tie game, Adam went down following throwing a pitch. He stayed on the ground, yelling in pain.
Padres reliever Jason Adam left Monday's game in gruesome exit to 2025 season
While the Padres have arguably the best bullpen in Major League Baseball, it was Adam who made this staff so elite. He had been the most reliable bullpen arm by far, and he was the guy who set up the closer to pitch a calm ninth inning. Not every team had that sort of luxury this season, and the Padres were much better with him constantly in the mix.
Yes, San Diego still has Mason Miller, Robert Suarez, Adrian Morejon, and more - but Jason Adam was the backbone of this staff. The weight of the pressure that Adam bared this season will now have to fall on the shoulders of each reliever... but even Adam thinks they can get it done.
“This bullpen is so deep. Of all the bullpens in the league to not need me, it’s this one. So I’m excited to cheer those guys on.”

In a moment that Adam deservingly could have cried for pity, he offered a vote of confidence for the rest of the Friars bullpen. He's going the humble route, but Padres fans are going to need a few days to process losing a guy with a 1.93 ERA and 29 holds. Jason Adam was just as important to this team as any other star player, but we'll see if the team can move on from him quickly.
