Padres insider puts Ethan Salas on the doorstep of a September call-up

The conversation surrounding Ethan Salas  has officially moved past the point of wishful thinking. When insider Dennis Lin says there is a “very good chance” Salas reaches the Padres in September, with an earlier arrival still on the table, that’s not exactly someone recklessly tossing prospect hype into a radio segment for some fluff. That is a connected Padres insider putting a real deadline on their biggest internal roster question.

It’s safe to say we should keep a close eye on Aug. 31st. The Padres have roughly three weeks to decide whether their 20-year-old catcher belongs in the organization’s 2026 postseason plans. If the Padres believe he can help in any meaningful way, the club has every reason to get aggressive.

Ethan Salas’ Triple-A performance is forcing the Padres’ hand

Lin’s said on Ben & Woods that the Padres are considering it. Salas earned his promotion from Double-A San Antonio to Triple-A El Paso on July 29 after hitting .286/.361/.417 with seven home runs across 72 games. He promptly looked like a player who had been waiting for a better challenge after arriving in El Paso. Through his first games, the offensive production jumped, and it began to look like he didn’t need another full season in the minors.

He’s currently slashing .333/.419/.667 with 2 home runs and 12 RBI in nine games. We aren’t talking about promoting Salas simply because he’s a popular name. He’s a legit top prospect dominating the last stage of competition before the majors. 

The playoff angle makes this legitimate. If the Padres want Salas in the conversation for a potential postseason roster, they need to have their ducks in a row before the Aug. 31 eligibility deadline. It means the Padres would keep the option alive instead of talking itself out of it before October even begins. And why would they close that door?

There is a crowd that prefers the Padres approach this with more caution. They would say Salas should stay in El Paso, keep hitting, and arrive next season with less pressure. That’s a fair plea. Development shouldn’t be a race, and the Padres shouldn’t be promoting him for novelty.

But the “he’s only 20” argument cannot become an excuse to ignore the production right in front of us. If Salas is handling Triple-A, the Padres believe his defense can hold up, and if he can make the big-league roster better, then they should be sure not to treat his age as a stop sign.
