Padres' gloomy pitching pipeline proves their rotation problems run much deeper

It is no doubt that the Padres pitching staff has been keeping them in the postseason run all season long. A big thanks to that would be their exceptional bullpen, as San Diego has the second best bullpen ERA, only trailing the Yankees. While the starting rotation has been up and down this season, it is worth wondering why we have not yet seen the opportunity for farm-system pitchers to show the Padres what they've got.

As we take a deeper look into the future of the Friars pitching staff, an important component to remember is that the Padres currently do not have any of their starting pitchers under contract for more than the next two seasons, with most of them expiring after this season or next season.

With bats such as Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill, as well as a top-tier bullpen led by the best closer in baseball, Mason Miller, many believe this team is built to win right now, and actually for the next few years. Despite the struggles at the plate this season, almost every championship contending team in recent history has had significant help from their starting pitching rotation.

The questions surrounding the Padres starting pitching has several factors to it. First, the injuries. Many of their bigger names on the staff have been held out for a significant amount of time this season, which makes it hard for the rotation to ever fully get into a rhythm. Secondly is just flat out inconsistency, guys like German Marquez can pitch a game allowing just a few hits before getting shelled in his next outing. So, how come a prospect hasn't gotten a true opportunity yet?

The truth about the Padres pitching pipeline

San Diego likely had a few prospects on their radar this season that they thought could make a splash on the pitching staff, but that plan sunk early on. Miguel Mendez was one that jumped out early on after having an electric 2025 season in High-A ball.

Mendez, who was signed as a teenager, has an impressive fastball that can reach triple digits, paired with a deceiving changeup. Unfortunately for the now 24-year-old, his 2026 season has not quite gone to plan. He has started 11 games in Double-A this season, with an ERA threatening 5. Although he has started in 11 games, he only has 34.2 innings thrown. Mendez's numbers are not totally underwhelming, but he is not yet a prospect the Padres think can make an immediate impact for a playoff push.

This is not to say the Friars do not have any encouraging pitching prospects, rather that their farm-throwers just need more time to develop-which may not fit their window to win. Of their top five prospects per MLB.com, three of which are pitchers, with one being Mendez. The other two are Kash Mayfield, who has been progressing well, as well as Kruz Schoolcraft, the 6-foot-8 southpaw. Both of which are 21 and 19 years old and have not yet seen past Single-A ball.

What now?

The answer is clear. The Padres need to look to add pitching upside. With the Padres in a window to win for the next few seasons, it is evident that they may not be in the mix to contend for a championship this season. Mason Miller, who's contract expires after this season, has been involved in trade talks considering the potential haul that San Diego can get for him. With the trade deadline coming up in just five days, the Friars could be in place to add a few arms to their future pitching staff.
