Padres' fourth playoff manager in seven years exposes A.J. Preller's biggest contradiction

When it comes to postseason contenders in the 2020s, the San Diego Padres are a familiar name. Now, the Friars are a breath away from making the playoffs for a third straight season and a fifth total time this decade. Though they haven't won a World Series, it is hard to argue against the team being a success.

And yet, regardless of the team's recent accomplishments, there has been a ton of turnover at the manager position. When the Padres clinch a playoff berth this week, it will mark the fourth different head coach to lead them to October since 2020.

In his first season as manager, Craig Stammen will join a list of former qualified coaches who took the Padres beyond the regular season:

• Jayce Tingler: 2020
• Bob Melvin: 2022
• Mike Shildt: 2024, 2025

The one constant among this head-scratching carousel is the man who decides who can manage the team: President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller.

Preller has long preached that the Padres will be a contending championship team, and that they will always try to outwork the competition. However, he hasn't allowed for any coach to really sink their teeth into the culture of the team and the consistency that it demands.

When will it be time for Preller to step away from the big red button and let his manager do the job that he was hired to do?

Is Craig Stammen already on the hot seat if Padres falter in the 2026 playoffs?

Stammen seems to be Preller's dream hire, but that should not allow for the first-year manager to sleep well at night. Tingler, Melvin, and Shildt all managed the Padres for two season before getting the boot.

So it really makes fans wonder how long Stammen's leash is in Preller's tight grip. Making the playoffs is clearly not enough — even if it Stammen's debut season. Is making the World Series the benchmark to clear? The National League is a gauntlet this year (is it ever not?). Good luck.

So, if that is Preller's bare minimum to keep a managerial job, then Stammen is already handcuffed. The Dodgers are going to be world dominators for quite some time, and the expectation should be that Los Angeles is the National League favorite until further notice.

It's a hard position to be in. Preller, like Padres fans, wants the team to win a title. But look at the recent managers of World Series winners. They are all well-established coaches. Preller needs to let his manager reach that point. Then, maybe we'll see the Padres inch forward in the championship ladder.
