The San Diego Padres are aching for another starting pitcher to provide some consistency. Michael King and Randy Vásquez have been stellar atop the rotation, but the rest of the pack has not carried their weight.
Friars fans thought they found an answer in Griffin Canning, but he has imploded since his Padres debut. Nick Pivetta has been hurt, as has Germán Márquez — though expectations were low for him. Walker Buehler's ERA is disappointingly over 5.00 through nine starts. Who can help fill the gaps?
San Diego was hoping that Lucas Giolito would be a big help for the bottom of the rotation. Sitting on the free agent market until late April, the Padres scooped up the 31-year-old right-hander following a decent 2025 season with the Red Sox. He had a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts, so it wasn't like the Padres were going a super risky route signing Giolito.
On May 17, Giolito made his Padres debut, and he didn't sour the occasion. He held the Mariners scoreless through five innings before allowing three runs in the sixth, but he earned the win regardless. It wasn't a terrible debut. Maybe Giolito is the answer to the problems hurting this team's starting staff.
Lucas Giolito had moments of greatness in Padres' debut vs. Mariners
Giolito got rid of any jitters immediately. He fired a 1-2-3 inning in the first, as well another one in the fourth frame. He totaled three strikeouts, fanning Randy Arozarena, Mitch Garver, and Luke Raley.
He didn't get too many swings and misses, but that's just fine. We don't need for Giolito to be a power arm. He just needs to get outs and put the Padres' lineup in a spot good enough for them to try and win. That's exactly the outing that Giolito gave on Sunday.
We shouldn't expect any more from Giolito, but we also shouldn't be easy on him. He is a veteran pitcher with an All-Star appearance to his name. There's a reason he has stuck around in the bigs despite several injuries, so Padres fans should expect for him to be a solid contributor — one who can supply some reliability to a bruised San Diego staff.
