The lights went out at Petco Park. The heavy guitar blared over the loudspeakers. The San Diego Padres fans went ballistic as Mason Miller trotted out from the bullpen to the pitcher's mound on Wednesday night in Game 2 of the Wild Card series against the Cubs.

It was a thrilling moment that Friars fans had been waiting over a year to happen.

"Blind" by Korn reverberated the city of San Diego minutes before Miller sealed the Padres' 4-1 series-clinching win, eliminating a Cubs team that disappointingly bounced the Friars a season ago. Fans celebrated Wednesday's victory after the final out, but they were jumping for joy once the lights cut out ahead of Miller's entrance.

They got to witness their star closer's iconic entrance in the postseason for the first time.

Mason Miller puts the perfect finish on Padres’ Wild Card sweep

Last year, Miller pitched in two of the Padres' three Wild Card games against the Cubs. So, we have a familiarity of Miller throwing in a Padres playoff game, but two things were still missing: 1. He didn't close either of those games in 2025 and 2. Both games were in Chicago.

We have seen Miller dominate time and time again, but we never had the opportunity to watch him go full Miller mode at Petco Park in the postseason. And that includes the walkout song, which is an intimidating track fit for someone only like Miller.

Like always, he did his job. In a scoreless ninth inning, he struck out two batters on a near-103 MPH fastball and a slider that almost touched 90. None of that came to a surprise, but the series sweep was sent off in a perfect way for Miller to fully cement himself as a Padres staple.
