The high altitude in Denver clearly didn’t get in the way of thinking for Rockies owner Dick Monfort, as he announced that the team would be parting ways with Bill Schmidt and searching for a new general manager this offseason.

The move comes after the Rockies finished with the third-worst season in MLB history, posting a record of 43–119, a slightly better result than the 2024 Chicago White Sox (41–121) and the 1962 New York Mets (42–120).

A slow start to the season resulted in Schmidt firing his manager, Bud Black, in May. As the season continued on a downward trajectory, it was only right for the team to move on from Schmidt as well.

“We are setting our sights on finding the right leader from outside our organization who can bring a fresh perspective to the Rockies,” said Walker Monfort, the team’s vice president.

The Rockies are one of two teams to move on from their GM, along with the Washington Nationals, who moved on from both Davey Martinez and Mike Rizzo midseason.

However, between the two vacant GM positions, one opening is far more attractive than the other. One features a promising young core of players to build around, while the other has an entirely replaceable roster according to WAR.

Whoever chooses to take the helm as the fifth Rockies GM in the team’s history will have a lot to fix. The lineup, starting rotation, and bullpen were all a hot mess in 2025.

The rotation logged a combined 6.65 ERA, while the bullpen wasn’t much better, at 5.18. The lone bright spot on the roster was Hunter Goodman, as the catcher turned in a 30-home-run season.

The moral of the story is that the Colorado Rockies are an utter mess, and it may be either a gift or a burden for the next man up in the front office. It will certainly be interesting to see whom the Monforts choose to hire.
