Eguy Rosario did not make the Opening Day roster for the Padres. This means that he currently doesn't have a team to play for, but Padres President of Baseball Operations AJ Preller is looking to change that. After Rosario clubbed three home runs and six doubles at spring training, he was eventually designated for assignment.

Rosario has some MLB experience, which could bode well for him as Preller is looking to trade the 25-year-old infielder to a proper suitor. This may have not been the result that Rosario was hoping for, but at least the Padres are helping to search for his new home.

Padres are looking to trade Eguy Rosario after leaving him off Opening Day roster

There were definitely a few surprise roster cuts at Padres camp this spring, but Rosario's dismissal does not come to as much of a shock. With veteran infielders Jose Iglesias, Yuli Gurriel, and Gavin Sheets added to the team this offseason, there was hardly any more room for another backup player.

Rosario displayed some power in 30 MLB games last year, muscling three home runs and an .814 OPS. His one downside is his strikeout rate, and he was set down 20 times in 57 plate appearances in 2024. He struck out 16 times - the most among Padres this spring - in 24 games.

A benefit for whichever team that takes a chance on Rosario is that they would have him under five seasons of club control. He won't cost much, and looking at his home run totals at each level, he might be worth the risk for some organizations. He powered 21 home runs last year with Triple-A El Paso, which was the second time he's registered 20 or more homers in a minor league season.

Who knows, Rosario might actually pan out somewhere. He never quite got a fair shake in San Diego, but his ability to produce extra-base hits should catch the attention of a few teams. As for the Padres, they will continue to try and refine a roster eager to compete in the NL West. They may look - ideally - for a pitcher or a catcher, or possibly an outfielder in exchange for Rosario. Regardless, it's settling to see Preller being proactive so early in the regular season.
