It is inevitable that the 2026 San Diego Padres roster will look completely different, as multiple starters are looking for more money elsewhere. But A.J. Preller isn’t concerned and has laid out a blueprint for what he plans to address.
“The core foundation, in terms of the position-player group and the bullpen is there,” Preller said. “Starting pitching is a clear area of need.”
The team needs to find starting pitching that can complement Nick Pivetta, the only starter under contract for the long term. Dylan Cease and Michael King are both set to depart in free agency, and Yu Darvish is contemplating retirement. The rotation is set to undergo a massive rebuild.
AJ Preller’s offseason priorities reveal the Padres’ 2026 strategy
While Cease is only 29, he is coming off a down year, as he posted a 4.55 ERA. However, he does have excellent stuff, and experts predict him to land a five-year contract worth $25 million per year. The Padres only have $47 million available in their payroll, so re-signing Cease may not be worth it long term.
As for Michael King, he is entering the final year of his deal and is set to make $15 million if both his party and the front office choose to accept the mutual option in his contract. But with all signs pointing to King departing before the 2027 offseason, it would not be a surprise if Preller gets ahead of the inevitable and trades him away.
Luckily for the Padres, the starting pitching available in free agency is not only good but also affordable. Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Chris Bassitt, and others are set to make less than $20 million per year.
There are also options that may be a little more pricey but could pay dividends in the long run. Framber Valdez, Shane Bieber, Ranger Suárez, as well as Dylan Cease, could be feasible options too. It all depends on how much A.J. Preller wants to invest in the starting rotation, as there are other holes that need to be filled.
