As the MLB trade deadline moves toward its final stretch, the San Diego Padres find themselves at a critical crossroads. Hovering on the edge of contention, the club is openly exploring every avenue to improve the roster.
In a bold signal of their intent to compete, the Padres have reportedly indicated that even top prospects Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas could be in play if the right deal presents itself. And among those big names, another has entered the conversation.
Padres open to trading ace Dylan Cease as deadline nears
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Padres have been taking calls on Dylan Cease. “Perception of other teams is that the Padres are intent on making a push for the playoffs,” Olney reported, “and would use Cease to help fill other roster needs. Mets, AL East teams, Cubs among teams that have talked about him.”
The idea of trading an ace while in the thick of a postseason push may seem counterintuitive, especially for a team still trying to address holes in left field, behind the plate, and at the back of the rotation. But there’s a logic to the madness.
Cease, who is eligible for free agency at season’s end, could bring back a substantial return. If the Padres view his departure as inevitable, flipping him now for impact talent — or even a haul of prospects, might be their best chance at maximizing value. That flexibility could allow President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller to simultaneously replenish the system and reshape the roster in a way that helps the team both now and in the future.
It’s a delicate dance, but Preller has never been shy about shaking up the roster. Whether it’s packaging Cease in a blockbuster to add a power bat or using the return to flip for controllable pitching, the Padres appear poised to once again be one of the most aggressive and unpredictable teams at the deadline.
As the rumors intensify, one thing’s becoming increasingly clear. This Padres roster could look very different by August 1.
