The San Diego Padres opened up their spring training season with a convincing 5-2 win against the Seattle Mariners, with Padres pitchers holding their opponents to just two total hits in the game. A number of new additions made their Padres debuts including Gavin Sheets and Connor Joe, while Manny Machado belted a home run on the very first pitch of spring training he saw.
The Padres pitching staff held a lifeless Mariners offense to minimal production at the plate, with recent Double-A call up Ryan Berget getting the start. San Diego would use nine pitchers during the game, with Tom Cosgrove giving up the only run of the day.
Padres lockdown pitching huge part of victory
Bergert would get things started for the Padres, taking just eleven pitchers to work through a 1-2-3 top of the first, highlighting his mid 90's fastball and impressive sweeper. Facing three of the Mariners best players in J.P. Crawford, Julio Rodriguez, and Cal Raleigh, Bergert induced three groundouts to make quick work of the Mariners stars.
The top of the second inning would bring another quick inning for Padres pitching, this time dished out by Logan Gillaspie. Striking out Randy Arozarena and getting Mitch Garver to fly out, Gillaspie would finish the inning by getting Dominic Canzone to pop out to third. In total, Padres pitchers would produce five 1-2-3 innings, with Bradgley Rodriguez, Omar Cruz, and Eduarniel Nunez all contributing to that number.
Cosgrove and Francis Pena would be the only two Padres pitchers to give up a run, with Pena's coming off a ninth inning home run given up to the Mariners Samad Taylor.
The Padres offense would get started with a jolt thanks to third baseman Manny Machado, who launched a two-run home run off the batter's eye in center field on the very first pitch he saw. The first inning would continue with back-to-back doubles from new additions Gavin Sheets and Oscar Gonzalez, with Gonzalez picking up one of his two hits on the day. Sheets would finish the day with two doubles, driving in Connor Joe with his second and picking up his first RBI as a Padre.
Other notable performances included Niko Goodrum who finished the day with one hit and multiple plays made at second base, Eguy Rosario who finished with one hit, run, RBI, and walk, and Connor Joe who finished with two walks and a run scored. Padres catchers on the other hand would not do much at the plate, with Elias Diaz going 0-3 while his replacement Ethan Salas would finish with one walk.
San Diego is the home team again tomorrow playing at 12:10 PM against the Sacramento Athletics.
