The Washington Nationals were clearly looking forward to playing the San Diego Padres this week. In a three-game slate at Petco Park, the Nationals brought the power, downing the Friars in a 10-6 drubbing to open the series.
Who could blame Washington for being eager to face the Padres, though? Two of their best players were once upon a time the best prospects in San Diego's organization, and now, they are dominating in the big leagues. On Monday night, James Wood crushed a three-run home run off Yuki Matsui in the eighth inning to blow the game open, and the young star definitely took his time admiring his moonshot.

It was Wood's 22nd home run of the season, and his first-ever against the Padres. He was sure to make it hurt, and the Nationals' social media team - who came prepared with their captions - added on to the sting. The Padres traded away Wood and CJ Abrams (who scored on that home run) to receive Juan Soto from Washington. Soto only lasted one-and-a-half seasons with San Diego, so the Nationals obviously won that trade -- and they are basking in it this season.
Wood is a certified All-Star, producing a 3.9 bWAR in 79 games with a .948 OPS. Abrams has a 2.9 bWAR and is on pace for a 25/25 season, all while Soto is playing elsewhere.
Between Abrams and Wood on Monday night against the Padres, they each batted 3-for-5 with three runs as the one-and-two batters in the starting lineup. Wood totaled four RBIs, and Abrams stole his 16th base of the season.
If these two up-and-coming stars continue to destroy at the plate this series, just how bad can it get for the Padres? Judging by the way they have played this season, Friars fans might want to buckle in for what could be a rough couple of days. The Nationals' social teams will definitely help you remember the mistakes that the Padres made to get us all here.
