Momentum growing for potential reunion between Padres and their former ace
Oftentimes, it is not a good idea to go back to your ex. There tends to be a direct reason for the split, whether it was healthy or not. There are instances, however, where the timing was not right โ and if both parties are open to it โ perhaps it is worth considering getting back together.
The Padres may want to conider getting back together with Blake Snell. The 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner with spent a rollercoaster season with the San Francisco Giants this past year, and it's being reported that Snell will likely exercise his opt-out clause, leaving the Bay Area after just one season.
Momentum growing for potential reunion between Padres and their former ace, Blake Snell
If the Friars want to bring Snell back to Petco Park, he would bring tremendous value to a rotation that will be without Joe Musgrove in 2025 following Tommy John surgery. Both Michael King and Dylan Cease will be entering their final year of team control as well.
San Diego may go another route, but Snell has proven that he gels with the Padres organization. Adding the lefty to a staff that already features King, Cease, and Yu Darvish would make the Padres rotation even more lethal.
It's fair to criticize Snell for his recent theatrics this past offseason. The former Padres ace didn't sign a contract until March. The unnecessary drama slowed Snell during the early-going, but the southpaw's output during the final final three months of the 2024 season should supersede his early-season struggles. The 31-year-old surrendered 11 total runs during his 14 starts from July through September.
Snell is clearly still atop his game, but proceed with caution. In nine big league seasons, the left-hander has thrown 180-plus innings only twice, which raises some red flags. In 2024, Snell battled adductor and groin injuries, but ultimately finished strong. His murky track record of staying healthy could spell trouble.
The Padres digging into their pockets for one of the best left-handed starters in the game would still be worth an attempt. If Snell plays up to his potential, targeting the former Cy Young Award-winner could be well worth the investment.
