When Ha-Seong Kim departed for Tampa Bay in free agency last offseason, Padres fans were heartbroken, as he was a fan favorite in San Diego. But after recent reports, a reunion may be on the table, as the Padres have been listed as a potential suitor for the 30-year-old infielder. But there is one factor that stands in the way of making this a reality.
Kim was placed at No. 31 on Jim Bowden’s free agent rankings, and he has hit the open market, choosing to decline his $16 million player option for the 2026 season.
Padres emerge as predicted destination for Ha-Seong Kim
This is where the possible reunion may be in flux, as Kim would be guaranteed more money than not if he picked up the option.
During his time with the Tampa Bay Rays and later with the Atlanta Braves in 2025, Kim put up his worst season in the majors since his rookie year in 2021. He missed nearly half of 2025 with a torn right labrum and he wasn’t able to return to his old form.
In the 48 games he did play, he slashed .234/.304/.345 with an 82 wRC+. This level of play is nowhere near being worth $16 million, so he has no business declining it in search of more money.
The other question that arises is whether the Padres even have the money to bring him back, as they already have five starters set to hit the open market. With players such as Luis Arráez, Ryan O’Hearn, and Dylan Cease set to leave, A.J. Preller has to act quickly in order to patch up the holes.
While it would be fun for both sides, it just isn’t logical, as Kim would be losing out on guaranteed money, and the Padres already have one of the most hectic offseasons ahead, where they need to prioritize other positions. Maybe a reunion occurs down the road, but not right now.
