Despite the Padres looking to make a deep playoff run in October, it is never too early to look ahead at free agency. In an article released by MLB expert Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, he predicted the Opening Day rosters for all 30 teams, and there could be a huge move on the way for San Diego.
The Padres have players such as Luis Arraez, Ryan O’Hearn, and Dylan Cease, among others, all set to hit free agency. A.J. Preller might dream of a scenario where he could retain everyone, but that would be almost impossible. Reuter predicted that O’Hearn would sign with the Cincinnati Reds, while Arraez would make the move to the East Coast to join the New York Yankees.
Padres linked to Gleyber Torres as possible second base upgrade
O’Hearn and Arraez each split time at first base, and with both departing it will be vital for Preller to act quickly. Reuter predicted that Jake Cronenworth would shift from second base to first, and that the Padres would sign a second baseman who is enjoying a very solid season offensively.
Gleyber Torres is putting together an exceptional season with the Detroit Tigers, doing so on what many might call a “prove-it” deal for the 28-year-old, who is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career.
Torres is a major reason for the Tigers’ having the success that they are this season, as the veteran is slashing .259/.365/.397 with a 117 wRC+, and has been named to his third career All-Star team.
Some underrated elements of Torres’ game is the fact that he does not chase out of the zone, takes his walks, avoids strikeouts, and can spray the ball to all fields. His ability to get on base has allowed the power hitters in the lineup to drive him in 74 times thus far.
Moving Cronenworth to first and signing Torres could be the move of the offseason for the Padres, as adding a contact bat to a lineup that already features several power hitters could provide a significant boost. For now, though, the Padres got to focus on “what’s in front of them,” as Aaron Boone would say.
