Mets fans won't miss Edwin Diaz much if they replace him with former Padres closer

Not who we want to see going to a National League playoff contender.

San Diego fans knew that Robert Suarez would likely not return to the Padres for the 2026 season. The two-time All-Star had $16 million left on on his deal over for the next two seasons, but that price point was obviously not going to cut it for him. He needed more. He deserved more.

Considering there is a strong market this offseason for top-end closers, it was clear that Suarez would try and test the waters himself. Obviously, Friars fans are sad to see him go, but the worst of it may not be over. When a player like Suarez hits the market, other high-spending teams on the precipice of becoming playoff contenders will inevitably target him. That's the business, and now, one of the biggest spenders has checked in on Suarez.

The New York Mets have reportedly reached out to Suarez, who would be the perfect replacement for Edwin Diaz. Diaz is looking for a deal that's worth over $100 million, and while he deserves it, someone like Suarez will be cheaper, and arguably more effective. If the Mets land Suarez, they'll forget about Diaz sooner rather than later.

Suarez, 34, will also be eager for a big payday, but we don't anticipate him being offered a contract in the four-to-six year range like Diaz. Suarez might garner a two or three year offer by a high-rolling like the Mets. He led the NL in saves with 40 this past season and registered his second sub-1.000 WHIP campaign (0.904) in the last three years. That will get him some decent offers, but not for something wildly long-term.

A team like the Mets would be perfect for Suarez, though it would break San Diego fans' hearts to see him pitch in the playoffs in a different uniform. This isn't the first time this offseason that the Mets and Padres are linked, either, as a potential trade for a starting pitcher could benefit the Padres if New York is looking to offload some capital as they look to build a better team with younger, but equally capable arms ready to go.
