It's been no secret that the Padres haven't put together a great offseason. While the Dodgers have catapulted ahead behind several big-name signings this winter, San Diego has fallen very far behind their NL West rival.
Though Padres fans have been upset over the front office being mostly dormant these last few months and wishing for someone to sign with San Diego, we're now starting to see some players give their thoughts on how the team looks for the 2025 campaign. Manny Machado, the star and the leader of the Friars, did not hold back on his disappointment in the Padres' offseason efforts.
Manny Machado admits the Padres lackluster offseason has not been well received
Machado is entering his seventh season in San Diego, and while he has received plenty of individual accolades and attention, he's seen this organization grow into a true playoff contender. Over these last several years, Machado has proudly led the Friars to an NLCS appearance and three total postseason campaigns. Turning this franchise around was not easy, but Machado has been key to the franchise's positive direction. You generally want to keep a guy of his status happy, but now, he has to watch his former teammates—and fellow vital clubhouse presences—depart for another team.
It seems San Diego is not adding anyone good to replace them, either. Productive players in Ha-Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar will be sorely missed, and not just by the fans. It's clear that Machado is unhappy to see those kind of players sign elsewhere, which doesn't bode well for the upcoming season. A disgruntled star won't get the clubhouse cheerful. That's not a great start to the year.
Like the professional he is, Machado re-steered his statement and said that he and his teammates will battle on the field, regardless of who they are doing it alongside. The main takeaway, though, is that he expressed disappointment before spring training has even started. Can the Friar front office make a last-minute improvement to the roster, or will they keep the face of the franchise unhappy?
