Luis Campusano surprisingly survives as 4 other Padres non-tendered at deadline
The Friars trimmed the roster to 33.
For the San Diego Padres, Friday's non-tender deadline was more about who was retained rather than who was let go. The Padres decided to hold on to catcher Luis Campusano despite his midseason trip to Triple-A El Paso. Campusano will now receive a pay raise from the Padres which is estimated to be around $1.7 million.
But while Campusano is safe, four other Padres players were non-tendered. The Friars waved goodbye to Luis Patiño, Logan Gillaspie, Bryce Johnson, and Mason McCoy. The Padres also signed infielder Tyler Wade to a one-year, $900,000 deal with a team-option for the 2026 season.

Campusano struggled mightily this past season. Assumed to be the Friars' primary backstop at the outset of 2024, Campusano was replaced by Kyle Higashioka. The Padres acquired Elias Diaz midway through the season and eventually optioned Campusano to the minor leagues. On the season, Campusano hit just .227/.281/.361 with eight home runs and 40 RBI. Perhaps his eight-game stint at Triple-A that yielded a .371/.405/.514 slash line solidified his spot on the offseason roster.
Saddled with injury, Patiño spend the entire year on 60-day IL. Gillaspie made just nine appearances for the Friars last season and owned an unsightly 7.15 ERA. A switch-hitting outfielder, Johnson's measly .524 OPS was his undoing, and McCoy's late-season call-up in place of Ha-Seong Kim wasn't enough to convince the Padres' brass to keep him around head into next season.
Wade on the other hand will be back next season. The serviceable utility player had horrific offensive stats, but his ability to play all over the diamond apparently offers enough value in the eyes of San Diego's front office and coaching staff.
President of baseball operations A.J. Preller now has a roster consisting of 33 players, so there's plenty of room available if the Padres' top decision-maker wants to make a splash this offseason.
