Giants act decisively after learning harsh Bob Melvin truth Padres already experienced

Friars fans sadly saw this coming.

While the San Diego Padres are celebrating and gearing up for another postseason run, one of their NL West rivals is already cleaning house.

Following a pretty disappointing 81-81 season, the San Francisco Giants dismissed manager Bob Melvin of his duties after a second-straight mediocre year. The Giants went 80-82 last year and hardly improved despite having star players like Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Logan Webb, and Robbie Ray play well.

Melvin, who coached for two seasons with the Friars prior to his tenure in San Francisco, somehow leaves a stronger legacy in San Diego despite his inability to adapt to the Padres' organizational operations.

Former Padres manager Bob Melvin fired by Giants after disappointing 2025 season

Melvin made it to the playoffs in his first season (2022) with the Padres, but was sent packing after a forgettable 2023 campaign that kept a strong Friars squad out of the postseason. In two years with the Giants, Melvin was unable to lead them to a postseason berth. The Giants have now gone four straight years without making it to the playoffs after an impressive 107-win campaign in 2021. Since Mike Shildt has taken over in San Diego as manager, the Padres have pieced together 93 and 90-win seasons - making the playoffs both times.

Melvin has now managed five different teams in his MLB career: Seattle Mariners (2003-04), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-09), Oakland A's (2011-21), San Diego Padres (2022-23), and the San Francisco Giants (2024-25). He owns a lifetime 1,678-1,588 record (.514), and although he hasn't been a top manager recently, there's a chance he will fall somewhere else for next season. He will be 64 years old in October, so there is still coaching time left in him, but only if another franchise is willing to take that chance on him.

Interestingly enough, news broke that the Pittsburgh Pirates decided to retain interim manager Don Kelly simultaneous to the report that Melvin was fired. Kelly took over after Derek Shelton was fired midway through the year, so he at least has a longer leash to get the Pirates back on track. Melvin, unfortunately, did not have as much time on his side.
