When the Padres dealt Ryan Bergert at the trade deadline, it was the kind of move that showed just how delicate roster-building can be. Bergert had proven himself as a promising young starter in San Diego, but the team’s glaring need behind the plate outweighed their desire to hang onto another arm.

Enter Freddy Fermin, the catcher acquired in the deal, who has been exactly what the Padres needed. He’s not only handled the pitching staff with confidence, but he’s also provided timely offense, posting a .270/.305/.390 slash line and a 1.3 WAR. For a team grinding through a postseason race where every edge matters, Fermin’s presence has been more than just insurance — it’s been a genuine boost.

Former Padres pitcher Ryan Bergert sidelined after strong debut stretch with Royals

Kansas City, on the other hand, got immediate returns on Bergert. The 25-year-old slotted into their injury-ravaged rotation and didn’t look fazed by the transition. In August alone, he gave the Royals five starts of at least five innings, including a quality outing that hinted at his potential as a long-term fixture. For a stretch, it looked like Kansas City had come away with a pitcher ready to anchor their staff that was depleted by injuries.

That momentum, though, hit a snag in September. Bergert was knocked around by the Guardians and Phillies, giving up 11 earned runs over just 7 1/3 innings across those two starts. Soon after, he reported forearm tightness during his bullpen session, which led to a stint on the 15-day injured list and ultimately cut his season short. It’s an unfortunate setback for a pitcher who was just starting to make his mark, but there’s little doubt he’ll bounce back. Bergert’s polished arsenal and mound presence suggest this is more of a temporary roadblock than a long-term concern.

For the Padres, the deal continues to pay off thanks to Fermin’s immediate impact, while the Royals can still feel confident knowing they landed a young starter with the tools to be a long-term fixture. In the end, it’s shaping up to be one of those rare trades where both sides walk away satisfied.
