Every former Padres player in the 2024 World Series between Yankees and Dodgers
You may have forgotten about one or two of these...
After falling to the eventual National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, the San Diego Padres must now watch their biggest division rivals compete for a World Series title.
As the Dodgers take on the New York Yankees in the best-of -seven series, Padres fans watching this year's World Series may recognize some familiar faces in both dugouts. Here are the four former Padres players who will be looking to help their respective teams win a world championship this year.
Every former Padres player in the 2024 World Series between Yankees and Dodgers
Daniel Hudson (RHP, Dodgers)
Right-hander Daniel Hudson's time in San Diego was brief and rather forgettable. He was dealt to the Padres at the 2021 trade deadline by the Washington Nationals, and he pitched to an uninspired 1-2 record and a 5.21 ERA over 19 innings. The season ended in disappointment for the Padres, who finished with a 79-83 record in a year they entered expecting to contend for the World Series.
Hudson elected free agency after the 2021 season and opted to re-sign with the Dodgers, where he had spent one season of his career in 2018. He has a 2.08 ERA over 4 1/3 innings for the Dodgers during the 2024 postseason so far.
Tim Hill (LHP, Yankees)
Unlike Hudson, Yankees southpaw Tim Hill actually spent the majority of his career with the Padres. Drafted in 2014 by the Kansas City Royals, Hill was traded to San Diego before the start of the 2020 season. In four seasons for the Padres, Hill posted a 13-10 record and a 4.18 ERA over 170 innings.
Hill elected free agency after last season and signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox, who proceeded to release him in June of this year. The Yankees picked him up and added him to their bullpen, where he has posted an impressive 1.59 ERA through 5 2/3 innings during the 2024 postseason.
Anthony Rizzo (1B, Yankees)
Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo was drafted in 2009 by the Boston Red Sox, but he can almost be considered a Padres homegrown talent. Boston traded him to San Diego in 2010, and he worked his way up through the Padres' system before ultimately making his MLB debut with them late in 2011.
The Padres traded Rizzo to the Chicago Cubs before the start of the 2012 season, and he went on to win a World Series with them in 2016. Now, he will be competing for his second World Series ring, this time for the Yankees, who traded for him in 2021. Rizzo has been a key contributor for New York so far in these playoffs, slashing .429/.500/.500 at the plate and logging 28 total putouts at first base.
Juan Soto (LF, Yankees)
Finally, we have Yankees outfielder Juan Soto, who played for the Padres as recently as last year. Traded from the Nationals to San Diego at the 2022 trade deadline, Soto helped the Padres upset the Dodgers in the NLDS before falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in five games in the NLCS.
After the Padres failed to make the playoffs last season, Soto elected free agency and signed a one-year, $31 million contract with the Yankees. He's slashing .333/.439/.667 with three home runs and eight RBI over nine postseason games for New York.
