Dodgers fans overreacting to Yankees fan incident with Mookie Betts have short memory
People in glass houses should not throw stones.
Okay, before delving into the insanity that happened inside Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, let's just understand that what happened between Mookie Betts and the New York Yankees fans during the first inning was completely unacceptable. There's no place in the game for that type of player-fan interaction.
But, while the Yankees' fans were completely out of line when they began grabbing Betts' glove and wrist, eventually ripped the ball out, let's not act as if we haven't seen similar behavior from another team's fanbase during these MLB playoffs.
Mookie Betts catch interference with Yankees fans should have Dodgers remembering NLDS
In case you haven't seen it, during Game 4 of the World Series between the Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, Gleyber Torres sent a fly ball down the right field line during New York's first at-bat of the game. The ball drifted toward the seats, and Betts made a fine catch to record the out.
But as Betts was coming down, a fan in the crowd grabbed ahold of the Dodgers outfielder's glove and attempted to pry it open like a clam shell. Another fan in the vicinity grabbed Betts by the wrist and the ball fell to the ground. The umpiring crew called fan interference and the two fans were rightfully removed from the premises.
The removal of the fans from the game wasn't good enough for some observers, however. Looking at some of the social media reactions, one would have thought that the Yankees fan treated Betts like Donald from Happy Gilmore and ran down the Dodgers' star with a Volkswagen. Again, the interaction was inappropriate, and the fans were rightly removed from the game.
Dodgers-Padres NLDS Game 1 was halted because of rowdy fans
But if you're a Dodgers fan, perhaps you should stop clutching your pearls. Let's not forget that during the National League Division Series, the Padres had to clear the field during the seventh inning of Game 1 after balls and other objects were thrown onto the field.
Things got so bad at Dodger Stadium during the game that security officials were stationed on the warning track in the outfield. Play stopped briefly in order to restore some sanity and clear the field of all the debris.
Neither incident is a good look for the respective fanbases. Those in attendance can boo and cheer for whoever they want — they've paid their money. But when items or fans entering the field of play, or a fan interfering with a player attempting to make a catch (as we saw in Game 4 of the World Series), there's no place for it.
So while the Yankees' fans were totally out of line, Dodgers' fans should remember the scene at Chavez Ravine just a few short weeks ago before making some rather harsh judgments.
