While the San Diego Padres are busy licking their wounds following an unproductive Winter Meetings filled with rumors of a roster teardown, another NL West team is busy making plans to improve their squad ahead of the 2025 season.
We all know that the Los Angeles Dodgers have more money than they know what do with and aren't afraid to spend it (or defer it). And it now appears that LA has set their sights on improving their bullpen heading into next season. One players who's caught the Dodgers' eye was the Padres' key acquisition at last summer's trade deadline.
Dodgers emerge as threat to steal former Padres pitcher Tanner Scott
According to The Athletic, the Dodgers are seeking at least one more top-of-the-market reliever this offseason and they're eyeing free agent pitcher Tanner Scott. The Padres gave up a small fortune to acquire the former Miami Marlins closer last July. Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley, and Jay Beshears were all part of the return package for Scott's two-month stint in San Diego. AJ Preller sure wishes he had some of those arms right about now, don't you think?
The Athletic also reported Scott is not the only reliever on LA's radar. Milwaukee Brewers' closer Devin Williams is on the trade block this offseason and could very well be on Andrew Friedman's Christmas wishlist. Well ... so much for that, because he was traded to the Yankees on Friday afternoon.
None of this is good news for a Padres organization that seems to be caught up in a myriad of trade rumors. Dylan Cease, Xander Bogaerts, and Luis Arráez are all being tossed about as possible trade candidates, and it's obvious San Diego's financial constraints have hit a tipping point. The Padres offloaded a ton of money last winter and may be well on their way to doing so once more.
So while teams like the Dodgers are happily looking to add to their already-loaded roster, the Padres are looking to dump some salary. It's depressing enough to watch the Dodgers just dominate the free agent market, but do so with their eyes on a former Padres' pitcher only adds insult to injury.
