With the 2025 MLB trade deadline approaching today at 6 p.m. EST, the Padres are still looking to make a few additions to the roster. Issues in left field and catcher are at the forefront of San Diego's plan to improve, while also potentially adding a starter and/or reliever.
As the clock is winding down, have a look at four predictions for the Padres ahead of the deadline. Hopefully things go better in reality.
4 final trade deadline predictions for San Diego Padres
Prediction: Padres trade Dylan Cease to the Astros
Since this past offseason, it felt inevitable that Dylan Cease would be traded. Thankfully, the Padres are making it tough on the other teams to acquire Cease, and we might not see him dealt until the final second.
Preller will listen to any and every offer on Cease, who is a desirable addition for several contenders. The Astros might be loading up a hefty deal, ideally one that the Padrs cannot resist.
Prediction: Padres whiff again on Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran
San Diego really wants Jarren Duran. They already attempted a trade offer with the Red Sox, but Boston ultimately turned it down. This didn't stop the Padres from losing interest on Duran, but it doesn't seem likely that Boston wants to do business with the Padres. If they couldn't wow the Red Sox on their first try, things probably won't look great on the second.
Prediction: Padres make trade with White Sox for Luis Robert Jr. and Korey Lee
To fulfill San Diego's left field and catching needs, they may settle on the White Sox to temporarily fix their problems. Korey Lee, a catcher, is not the future of the team, but he could be a solid option as a call-up, as he is hitting .275 with Triple-A Charlotte this season.
Robert Jr. is having a down year, and a change of scenery will only do him good. Acquiring these two players will not be expensive at all, so if the Padres go this route, it's not exactly signaling confidence in making a strong postseason push this year. But, at the end of the day, Preller has to do something to fix these two areas on the field.
Prediction: Padres get Mason Miller from A's
The Padres are interested in A's reliever Mason Miller, but he is going to cost any interested team plenty in return. The Padres could field an offer, but it's doubtful that the A's are willing to be low-balled for Miller - so San Diego will need to go all in. He was unavailable on Wednesday night, after all. It could hint at something for the Friars.
