Padres trade news: Josh Hader being traded to San Diego, per report

The San Diego Padres have agreed to trade for Milwaukee Brewers closer Josh Hader, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first reported.

The 28-year-old left-hander Hader has an ERA of 4.24 this season, but has already racked up 29 saves with just two blown saves for Milwaukee. He has 59 strikeouts and 12 walks in 34 innings. He has a 1.18 WHIP.

Hader has  four All-Star Game nods across his six-year career and finished seven in Cy Young voting in 2018.

For his career, Hader’s ERA is 2.48 with a 0.882 WHIP in 316 innings. He strikes out 15.4 batters and walks 3.4 batters per nine innings.

He is owed the remainder of $11 million in 2022 and one year of arbitration eligibility remaining before being able to declare free agency after 2023.

The cost isn’t a cheap one.

Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Brewers receive left-handed closer Taylor Rogers, right-hander Dinelson Lamet, outfielder Esteury Ruiz, and left-handed pitching prospect Robert Gasser.

The 31-year-old Rogers has 28 saves for the Padres this season in 35 attempts. He has an ERA of 4.35 along with 48 strikeouts and nine walks in 41 innings.

This was Rogers’ first season in San Diego after being acquired from the Twins just before the season started. He’s owed the remainder of his 2022 $7.3 million contract and is a free agent after this year.

The 29-year-old Lamet has struggled this year, posting an ERA of 9.49 in 13 games of relief.

For his career, Lamet has a 4.08 ERA in 82 games, including 56 starts. He’s being paid $4.8 million and can be declare free agency in 2025.

A 23-year-old rookie outfielder, Ruiz has six hits in 27 plate appearances for the Padres this year, including a home run.

He hit .333/.467/.560 for a 1.028 OPS combined across Double-A and Triple-A before joining the Padres. He has an .817 OPS for his minor-league career.

The 23-year-old Gasser was ranked No. 7 in the Padres’ system per MLB Pipeline. Gasser is currently in Advanced-A. He has a 4.18 ERA across 90 innings there, to go with 11.5 strikeouts and 2.8 walks per nine innings.
