Mike Clevinger was spotted throwing a bullpen session ahead of the Padres matchup with the Cardinals. Could he start Game 3, if needed?
With Chris Paddack starting Game 1 for the Padres on Wednesday, the health of Dinelson Lamet is left up in the air. Lamet left his last start with bicep tightness after just 3.2 innings. The Padres elected not to have him get an MRI, deeming the injury not significant.
And he’s not the only one dealing with an injury.
Mike Clevinger is dealing with the same bicep tightness. The early reports suggested that he could return in the third round of the playoffs, with the hopes that could be accelerated to the second round. The Padres are hoping it may be sooner than that, and recent video surfaced of Clevinger throwing a bullpen session.
It’s only one pitch in the video, but Clevinger is throwing the ball pretty hard. Of course, throwing a few times in a bullpen session is far different than throwing it 90 times in a playoff atmosphere.
That said, it’s encouraging to seeing their trade deadline splash amping it up. We’ll see if the Padres end up in a position needing a Game 3 and if Clevinger would be slotted into a starting role. However, they will need both Lamet and Clevinger to make a deep postseason run.
