In FanSided’s community mock draft, the Padres landed Robert Hassell in the first round.

On Wednesday, the MLB Draft will officially begin. And to prep everyone for that, FanSided held a community mock draft, with the Padres taking Robert Hassell with the eighth overall pick. Hassell is a Vanderbilt commit and is reportedly going to be a tough sign away from the Commodores, especially given how prominent that program is.

However, general manager AJ Preller’s track record indicates a high school is a logical pick. For what it’s worth, my top two choices were Zac Veen or Max Meyer, but they both went just before the Padres were on the clock.

Here’s the scouting report on Hassell, according to Perfect Game:

"Lean high waisted athletic build, lots of physical projection, and room to get stronger. 6.54 runner, moves well in the outfield with light feet and good overall athleticism and bounce, can use his lower half more throwing. Left-handed hitter, wide slightly open stance, has fast hands he uncoils well to start his swing, uphill swing plane with good extension out front, projects power, ball jumps when squared, loose and easy swing."

And here’s how the rest of the first round went:

  1. Tigers: Spencer Torkelson
  2. Orioles: Asa Lacy
  3. Marlins: Austin Martin
  4. Royals: Nick Gonzales
  5. Blue Jays: Zac Veen
  6. Mariners: Emerson Hancock
  7. Pirates: Max Meyer
  8. Padres: Robert Hassell
  9. Rockies: Reid Detmers
  10. Angels: Patrick Bailey
  11. White Sox: Garrett Mitchell
  12. Reds: Herston Kjerstad
  13. Giants: Mick Abel
  14. Rangers: Garrett Crochet
  15. Phillies: Cade Cavalli
  16. Cubs: Nick Bitsko
  17. Red Sox: Austin Hendrick
  18. Diamondbacks: Ed Howard
  19. Mets: Dillon Dingler
  20. Brewers: Pete Crow-Armstrong
  21. Cardinals: Cole Wilcox
  22. Nationals: Tyler Soderstrom
  23. Indians: Jared Kelley
  24. Rays: Austin Wells
  25. Braves: Nick Loftin
  26. Athletics: Bobby Miller
  27. Twins: Carmen Mlodzinski
  28. Yankees: Bryce Jarvis
  29. Dodgers: Carson Tucker

Two of the biggest surprises in the first round were Jared Kelley falling to number 23 overall, and also the Orioles passing on Austin Martin. Would you be happy with the Hassell pick in the first round?
