We take a look back at the last 10 Memorial Day games for the San Diego Padres and relive some of the best moments from these games.
While we all take a break from our busy life to remember those who have served our country on this Memorial Day, I thought we’d also take a look back at some of the best San Diego Padres games on this holiday over the last 10 years.
I’m sure, like me, all of you probably love to sit down on Memorial Day and watch baseball all day long.
Unfortunately, that won’t happen this year, but we still remain thankful for the freedoms we have because of the brave men and women who fought for those freedoms. And that’s really what this day is about.
2010
The Padres laid a beatdown on the New York Mets destroying them 18-6. They put up 6 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings on Mets starter Hisanori Takahashi (remember him? … no … me either).
Jerry Hairston had the big blow with a grand slam off Takahashi in the second inning. Chase Headley had 4 hits and 4 runs scored in the game, while Nick Hundley and Chris Denorfia each had 3 hits.
2011
This was a very memorable game against the Braves as a Kyle Phillips home run in the 10th inning gave the Padres the 3-2 lead and they eventually won by that score.
Aaron Harang started that game for the Padres and gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. But then the bullpen was lights out for the next four innings with Heath Bell closing the door in the 10th.
2012
This one was not a great result for the Padres as they lost 11-7 to the Chicago Cubs. But Headley had another huge Memorial Day game with San Diego going 4-for-5 with 2 runs, 3 RBI, and 2 home runs.
2013
This was a Memorial Day game to forgot as the former Padres and Memorial Day starter in 2011, Aaron Harang, pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout against the Padres with 8 strikeouts.
2014
The Padres are on a bit of a Memorial Day cold streak at this point dropping this one against the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 with the A.J. Pollock hitting a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Kevin Quackenbush.
2015
A year later, it was Quackenbush on the mound again on Memorial Day giving up a walk-off hit. This time it was against the Los Angeles Angels.
Albert Pujols push a single through the left side of the infield to drive in the winning run for the Angels who won 4-3.
2016
The losing streak continues for the Padres in 2016 as they lost badly to the Seattle Mariners 9-3 despite picking up 9 hits, including two from Wil Myers.
2017
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning against the Chicago Cubs on this Memorial Day, the Padres scored 5 unanswered runs to win the game 5-2.
It was Hunter Renfroe who had the big hit with a grand slam in the fourth inning.
2018
The Marlins ambushed Eric Lauer on this Memorial Day putting up 4 runs in the first inning. They’d score another run off him in the third before knocking him out and the fish went on to beat the Padres 7-2 racking up 15 hits in the process.
2019
Last year the Padres had the thrill of hosting the mighty New York Yankee on Memorial Day. After the good guys took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a pair of doubles from Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges, the powerful Yankees lineup answer right back with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning on two home runs.
They’d hit a third home run in the eighth and would go on to win the game 5-2.
I’d say 2011 and 2017 were two of the best Memorial Day games of the last 10 years. And I’d also make it a rule that a Quackenbush never pitchers on Memorial Day every again.
We hope you all have a great Memorial Day with friends and family as we honor those who have fought and continue to fight for this country.
