This match up will feature two winless pitchers trying to tally the win column. Tom Eshelman has started his rookie season 0-2, owning a 5.79 ERA and 1.446 WHIP. His last appearance was a solid one, allowing one run in 4.1 innings of relief against the Los Angeles Angels.

His last start, however, was against the Boston Red Sox on July 20, and it was atrocious. The rookie allowed nine runs off six hits, giving up three home runs with three strikeouts and three walks. That said, four of those runs were unearned, but he still couldn’t make it to the fourth inning. The Friars should have a blueprint to rattle him this time around.

Meanwhile, Dinelson Lamet will look for his first win of the year as he takes the mound for the Padres. The second-year starter has struggled in all but one of his 2019 games — he’s allowed five hits in eight innings pitched over the last two games, and 10 runs over 18 total innings. He’s also 0-2 thus far with a 5.00 ERA and 1.242 WHIP.

Granted, Lamet is fresh off Tommy John surgery and is still trying to find his groove. It’s very possible that he’ll need the rest of the season just to regain his confidence and refine his mechanics.
