A.J.Preller and the San Diego Padres may have pulled off a master stroke by signing Manny Machado. The ten-year, $300 million deal is definitely an anomaly for San Diego’s fanbase.

Only time will tell how fruitful this signing will play out but the timing of this move is absolutely perfect. San Diego’s fan base is in dire need of a sports hero. Philip Rivers now plays for the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Diego Padres have not made a postseason appearance since 2006, coming off a 66-96 season.

Despite ruffling a few feathers in the past, Manny Machado brings with him a superstar-attitude and a personality that will help unite a reeling fan base.

As per Statista, San Diego Padres’ average regular season attendance for 2018 was 26,837. This number has only topped 30,000 once in the last ten years (30,367 in 2015). Manny’s addition will definitely bring more baseball enthusiasts to Petco Park. If the Padres can get off to a decent start, there is a very good probability that average attendance will be the best in the last decade.

As per 10news, the Padres were able to sell out the Opening Day 2019. This was regarded as one of the earliest sellouts in recent history and Manny’s presence is definitely a factor.

Increased foot falls to Petco park, increased number thirteen jersey sales, and increased expectations will all bring back some much-needed revenue to the Friars’ front office. Machado’s signing coupled with Eric Hosmer‘s presence will ensure that the top stars don’t shy away from signing multi-billion dollar deals with the San Diego Padres.

Can the Padres compete with the likes of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees in the future? (Let’s not forget the Houston Astros)

San Diego Padres: Machado made the right choice

Manny Machado, the number 3 draft pick from 2010 MLB Draft made the perfect choice by choosing the Friars. He could have taken a pay cut and picked the New York Yankees or the Philadelphia Phillies but Manny has been presented with a unique opportunity, an opportunity to make an impact to San Diego’s baseball community.

San Diego is looking for a sporting hero. There hasn’t been a bigger baseball star in town in ages it seems. The Friars haven’t made the postseason since 2006, and haven’t played in the World Series since 1998. The Padres’ farm system is arguable the best in all of Major League Baseball. With all of the above known factors Manny Machado has potential to be a game changer for San Diego.

If Machado had signed with the Yankees, he likely would have won a few more rings, but with the San Diego Padres, Manny Machado has the potential to leave a long lasting impact on baseball and on the Friars. For baseball’s sake, let’s hope the Friars and Manny Machado continue to flourish.
