SP/RP Vance Worley:

Aside from having an unusual last name, you’ll probably remember Vance Worley as the Phillies best pitching prospect back when they had the Fab Four. Now, he’s just a 29-year-old long reliever and spot starter who can pitch well enough to soak up innings, but he’s not exactly high in demand by “good” teams.

Last year, he managed to throw 86 2/3 innings with a 3.53 ERA, but his peripherals were sub par.

A low 5.8 K/9, paired with a high 3.6 BB/9, is normally not a good recipe for a guy who gives up his share of taters (0.9 HR/9). Not exactly a homer machine, but when you walk that many and can’t clear the bases with strikeouts, those home runs can bite you more than usual.

I’d expect the Padres to deploy him in a long relief capacity should they sign him. This, to reintegrate, is due to San Diego’s poor pitching depth. Worley shouldn’t be relied upon in key situations and should only be kept as long as he is useful.
